Nearly 20 years of working the landscaping buisness, I have collected several tips that are extremely helpful for any landscape project. Soil Tips

  1. Work in 3 to 4 inches of organic matter such as well-rotted manure or finished compost
  2. Mulch around your plants with leaves, wood chips, bark, hay or straw. Mulch retains moisture and cools the soil
  3. Add at least 2 inches of organic matter each year
  4. Grow cover crops or green manures

Tool Tips

  • Wrap tools for a better grip using rope and duct tape to hold in place
  • To protect round-point shovels, slit a piece of hose over the cutting edge
  • Get a bucket and fill with sand and vegetable oil. The gritty substance works well to get rid of sap and mud and treats tools with a coating of rust-preventing lubrication
